THREAD CLOSED - NO FURTHER REPLIES OR EDITS ALLOWED Thoughts on Damascus styles...
Got a new knife for work, Damascus style, and assumed it was just etching instead of the good stuff....
It came in last night and I was shocked to see the quality, I honestly believe I got the real shit for once!
Pictures in a moment, it's hard for my phones to catch all of the quality
Edit: please no extra history lessons.

I just feel bad for anyone who has to sharpen tanto blades on a regular basis. It's almost as annoying as sharpening serrations. Looks nice tho!

If you have to sharpen serrations often, your doing something wrong. Personally I find a tanto easier to sharpen.

It can look surprisingly good with laser etching. The photo doesn't show much detail, but one way to know is price - true Damascus, hammered and layered steel is rare, expensive, and requires a true craftsman...
You like the way it looks? That's all that matters!

It's most definitely layered steel, that's what I was trying to show in photo but I'm no photographer. Solid core with Damascus layering. I was surprised it wasn't just laser etching.
Not all Damascus is expensive either. The material used is where a chunk of that cost is from. I doubt this knife is high quality steel, but it is genuine Damascus.

I tried really hard with a jewelers lense to get a photo of the spine. You can see the layers pretty well.

Maybe you should just start by searching "Damascus steel" online, so you'll better understand what Damascus steel actually is, instead of this "catch-all" term that gets thrown around a lot....to begin with, "True" Damascus pattern isn't Geometric style lines, it's a more freeform, 2-tone "wavy" pattern.
Not trying to burst your bubble, just want to give you a better idea of what real Damascus is. The original is lost to the ages, but more modern techniques still exist. Yes, you may have layered steel, instead of lasered steel, as it is often done in a "quick" manner by welding different steels on top of each other, and then grinding them smooth...the result is a much cheaper version of "Damascus Style" steel.
I have quite a few pieces myself - and I can't afford the original, "Japanese craftsman" Damascus steel ...it's honestly just out of my financial means, lol.
You've got a nice looking knife, that's the main thing... with that geometric, perfectly repeated pattern, you've most likely got lasered steel, as real damascus cannot be geometric, as much as "free form" wavy lines, with two or more different colored steels.
I';m not an expert on the matter, however. But I do know quite a bit about the subject, as I wanted to be informed when I made my purchases...and you know, I'm perfectly happy with nicely done laser etching, it really looks great, and is almost not discernible from "welded style" Damascus.

You are lost....
Try searching copper Damascus, or any other metals. It is a style of forging created by layers of mixed(or same) material. Times have changed.
At the end of the day, this knife is going to be abused so the aesthetic finish isn't really going to matter.
