Thoughts on pattern steel...(revisited)
This thread is open to any discussions on pattern, Damascus, wootz or any other variation of metallurgy. Also open to photos of any item pic of interest.

This example was crafted in New Mexico on the Reservation near Gallup in the early/mid-nineties.

This next image is "Tamahagne". It is bloom in the Japanese tradition sometimes aka "Jewel Steel" used in producing high quality blades.

This image is of a typical bloom in the "Western" tradition.

I'm out.....have some fun. Eh?

yep, looks like slag I chip off my Arc welds, just bigger, lol!

What a transformation, huh? I'm not a "knife" guy, but I do appreciate anything "metal"...

especially True Norwegian Black Metal, lol!

I think I have a question for the forum expert (Vape8): What is the lowest price blades you have seen that are NOT laser-etched Damascus pattern? What is the "buy in" for modern Cast or Welded patterned knives?

Re-using my relevant photos from previous thread...again, The Widowmaker mod is custom, my design...the knife is Asmodus, around 75.00, and is stabwood, resin, and I believe laser-etched Damascus...not sure, honestly.

First off, I am a novice and student, by no stretch am I an expert. I have seen decent handcrafted smallish welded pattern blades in the $250-$500 range. The smiths who do the best work rarely sell. You can expect a 6" or 7" blade to start around $2500 from a certain Russian if he will sell.

You can buy Pakistani blades all day for less than a hundred, last time I looked.

Your "Asmodus" looks to be etched. Not abso sure. In my example, you can run a fingernail over the pattern and feel it change from one metal to the other. That is not to say it could not be worked smooth. But still, one should be able to discern the differences in texture.

The two bloom examples are strikingly different. The finished products of both are as different, both in appearance and usage, when it comes to weaponry.

Norwegian Black Metal

LoLzzz, I do sometimes like your sense of humor.

Post script edit...I paid $150 for that little ~3" blade in 1995 or so. Not cheap but the smith was cool and demand was outstripping supply.

lol, one man's metal is another man's prog rock!

Did enjoy Remission and Leviathan, however...if you enjoy Mastodon's newer output, you might enjoy Between the Buried and Me's "Floydian" take on heavy music!

Here is a master blade smith at work. He has taken up the term "Damascus" since about 6 years ago. Before he would just call it a "this or that" blade, but now he makes pattern steel out of virtually any metal object/s. I don't care what he calls it, this man is a master.

There are a couple of idiosyncratic trademarks in his vids...one, he makes tea, the other is he works without gloves and wipes the anvil bare handed.
